Whenever a client tells me “our marketing leads are garbage,” I smile. In four decades of consulting for over 350 companies, I have almost never found a business where the leads were truly the core problem.
The problem is almost always upstream—in the expectations you set before the lead ever fills out a form.
If your ad promises a “Free ROI Calculator,” you are going to attract people who want free tools. When your sales team calls them 5 minutes later trying to sell a $50,000 service, the prospect gets annoyed and sales gets frustrated.
The lead wasn’t bad. The marketing promise was disconnected from the sales goal.
If you want better leads, stop setting traps to get quick contact info. Be upfront about who you serve, what problem you solve, and what it takes to work with you. You might get fewer form fills, but the people who reach out will actually buy.
